Dark circles under a baby's eyes can be a source of alarm to parents, but usually there is nothing to fear. Many things can cause these circles to appear and, in most cases, they can be easily treated with a quick trip to the doctor for some medication or an easy home remedy.
Genetics and Injury May Lead to Dark Circles Under Eyes
If mom or dad have dark circles under their eyes, chances are baby will too. Also, people who are on the fair side might show circles under their eyes more easily than someone with a darker skin tone. In these cases, unfortunately, not much can be done.
Many times a dark circle under the eye of a baby could simply be caused by an injury. Babies are not the most coordinated people on earth and frequently accidentally hit themselves or other babies with rattles, blocks, and so on. Also, babies who are learning how to crawl or walk do not always watch where they are going and will run into objects in their paths, causing a black eye. If the dark circle is just under one eye, injury is probably the cause. Just watch it carefully for a few days to see if it goes away.
Dark Circles Under Eyes Caused by Nasal Congestion
Nasal congestion is a leading cause of dark under eye circles in young children. Many times this is caused by a cold or a runny nose due to teething. Since there are no medications recommended for children under six for nasal cold relief, the best parents can do is use the dreaded nasal aspirator, saline drops, and a cool mist humidifier until the cold goes away.
Allergies are another culprit that lead to a stuffy nose, and, according to the article "Allergies" on Babycenter.com, dark skin under the eyes or what doctors call an "allergy shiner." These are caused by dilated veins under the eyes. If a parent suspects allergies, the baby should be taken to the doctor for a proper diagnosis. Other symptoms in addition to the dark circles under the eyes can include, watery eyes, sneezing, rashes, a clear, runny nose, and wheezing. There are several over the counter and prescription medications that a doctor can suggest that can help manage the symptoms which will eliminate the dark circles under the baby's eyes.
Enlarged adenoids can be another cause of nasal congestion. According to the article "Allergy Signs in Children" on Dr.Paul.com, enlarged adenoids can block the nasal passages and lead to congestion, which will cause the dark circles. Other symptoms of enlarged adenoids can include mouth breathing, snoring, runny nose, and restless sleeping. If a parent suspects enlarged adenoids with her child, she should discuss it with the child's pediatrician. In some cases, it could be a sign of sleep apnea.
Skin Problems Cause Darkening Around the Eyes
Eczema is another culprit of dark circles under the eyes. Usually people think that eczema only affects the skin behind the knees and elbows, but it can crop up almost anywhere, including around the eyes. The itchy skin can lead to rubbing the eyes and dark circles. If eczema is suspected, ask the doctor for a baby safe remedy or a referral to a dermatologist who has experience working with babies.
Dark circles under a baby's eyes may be caused by genetics, injury, nasal congestion or skin conditions. In extremely rare cases, these circles could be caused by something serious. As always, express any concerns with the baby's doctor and don't be afraid to ask for a second opinion.
